Old 16-bit and DOS drivers are good for nothing except dragging your system down. You can find out in a flash whether your PC is set for the best performance. From the Control Panel, double-click on System, choose Properties, click on Performance, and look for the magic words Your System Is Configured for Optimal Performance. If you see a different message--Some Drives Are Using MS-DOS Compatibility--your PC's performance is taking an unnecessary hit. Every time your system accesses the hard drive, a floppy disk, the CD-ROM drive, or another device, Windows has to run 16-bit code. Examine the list of MS-DOS Compatibility Mode problems and either update your Windows 95/NT drivers or replace that piece of hardware with a Windows Plug and Play 32-bit device.
